AlertMeter – Managing Impairment in the workplace

Alertness and impairment data from traditional lagging indicators like drug testing and employee screening are of little use when it comes to staying ahead of accidents caused due to emotional, mental or physical impairment.

A study completed at a US mining site of 1500 of its above-ground workers were asked the following 2 questions:

“Do Employees Work While Not Fully Alert?”  Picture1

81% of respondents reported that they work while not fully alert. Of the 81%:
  • 14% stated they do it regularly
  • 67% stated they do it sometimes

When asked if Employees Feel Safer Knowing Co-workers are Fully Alert:

  • 91% stated yes
  • 9% had no preference

Most common Causes of Impairment

  • Emotional (Relationship issue)
  • Mental (Financial or Personal stresses)
  • Physical (Fatigue, Dehydration)
  • Chemical (Drugs, both prescribed/unprescribed and illicit)

Finding the right solutions that balances company safety KPIs with employee privacy and engagement, has to date been a challenge for large businesses, particularly where it is hard to have a full line of sight of all employees physical wellbeing prior to commencing their role each day.

AlertMeter© revolutionary system stays one step ahead of alertness risk by testing employees as they clock-in and providing key alerts right when they matter most. Based on a partnership with the alertness and impairment research team at Bowles-Langley Technology in the US. And with over 50 million man hours of testing this scientifically proven technology has been detecting alertness deviations reliably in real workplaces for years in the US and South Africa. Finally, it is available to the Australian market.

At the end of the day it really does not matter why an employee's alertness is not tip-top, what is important is keeping them, and your site, safe. That is why we created AlertMeter, to let the businesses of today stay one step ahead of reduced alertness and workplace impairment to save lives.

How does AlertMeter Work

AlertMeter is an easy to use, language-independent 60-second test that employees perform at the beginning of their shift or at a critical time before performing a high-risk activity. The result immediately provides real-time notification to the employee of their result against their individual baseline. If the outcome is outside the individual’s baseline, then a nominated supervisor is notified to have an “RUOK” discussion with the employee.

Alert WorkersThe 60-second test can be performed on a mobile device, iPad/tablet, or desktop computer.

“We think the AlertMeter is the best bang for the buck of any of our safety practices.

The feedback it gives to our employees motivates them to take responsibility for their off-time lifestyle behaviour.

They are definitely arriving more alert and more rested than they used to.”
