Leadership - The Sixth Discipline

By
1 Minute Read

Over the years, we have continued to develop and shape our Evolve2 Leadership Program. As a result, we have had hundreds of participants through the 6 sessions, many now achieving great things and gaining recognition within their chosen fields.

In session one, Leaders and Managers, we touch on the 7 critical elements of leadership:

1

  1. Communication
  2. Learning
  3. Clear Direction
  4. Courage
  5. Innovation
  6. Business & Customer Focus
  7. People & Teamwork

The 6th element of the leadership model requires leaders to direct their focus to the future and continuously put a high priority around business and customer focus. This can be one of the more challenging areas to achieve, with organisations requiring senior leaders to achieve short term outcomes, complimented, and driven by similar Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s).

This pressure leads us to become internally focused, so constantly looking at the day-to-day activities around us.

InternalAre you internally focused right now?

  • Your team has significant industry experience.
  • You can always find solutions internally.
  • You are driven by KPI’s and achieving the next goal
  • You attend many meetings
  • Personal development is not important right now
  • Networking is not a priority

Let’s face it; leadership can be a blur at times, with days and even months just seemingly disappearing; so, what can you do to ensure you become more externally focused and create some balance.

  • Start by networking in your own organisation, but outside your department, a great place to start is sales.
  • Understand your business big picture strategies and how they relate to you and your team.
  • Read blogs and articles regularly to broaden your horizon on innovations and technologies.
  • Consider other internal departments as your customer and seek feedback on your performance.
  • Join an industry networking organisation to explore new ideas and thoughts beyond your immediate industry sector.
